 Types of research

Uitzicht is a cooperation of several Dutch funds for people with visual impairment. These funds finance –among other things- scientific research on the origins, prevention and treatment of eye diseases and disorders. The notion 'eye diseases and disorders' is interpreted in a strict way here. Cerebral blindness (blindness due to a cerebral disorder, nothing being wrong with eye itself) is beyond the scope of UitZicht.

Definitions of the types of research
bulletfundamental research: research of which the research question is mainly defined by internal scientific motives and is primarily focussed on the increase in knowledge. In general this concerns long-term research.
bulletstrategic research: research of which the research question is defined by internal scientific motives, but which is also oriented to practical application, or which has as a starting point a more generally formulated practical problem taken from clinical or social practices. Generally spoken, this is middle-long-term research.
bulletapplied research of which the research question is based on a specific concrete problem, the aim being practical application. This mostly involves short-term research.

Source: The three types of scientific research are defined by the national research organizations KNAW, NWO, RGO, VSNU.:
